Great care and attention should be shown when preparing your CV. Although opportunities are rarely won purely from a CV, they can very often be lost.
Your CV should of course be a factual statement. However it should also be used as a medium capable of intriguing, interesting and even exciting it’s reader. There are some basic rules to follow when preparing a CV. Some you will already know:- • Keep it relevant Although there may be aspects of your career that you yourself find interesting, it must be remembered that you will be dealing with busy people with limited time available to go through many CV’s. If your information effectively communicates your abilities and background in a concise and relevant manner it will already be seen in a positive light. • Highlight abilities and achievements Give examples of work related challenges you faced, your contribution and the results and benefits to your employer.
When referring to unrelated jobs, keep the description to a minimum • Be honest It is far too easy to want to gloss over periods of instability or mention only those roles that suggest suitability for the position. However, it is always important, especially in the industry in which we operate, to give a full chronologically correct breakdown of all periods of employment. Far better to be ‘found out’ as being unsuitable at this stage than waste yours and the clients time and have unfavourable information come to light during the vetting process. Trust is of course the foundation in any successful working relationship.
• Keep it up to date Through the course of any given year, you will often develop new abilities, be given new responsibilities or achieve new successes. Don’t sell yourself short and fail to include these in any new job application.
We have detailed below a suggested format in which to present your CV and hope the above tips are of some help.
